Clinical Associate Professor Wong Hon Tym is the Clinical Director of the Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), where his co-leadership particularly emphasizes capability building, healthcare sustainability, knowledge management, start-up testbed facilitation and mentorship.

He is also a Senior Consultant and a previous Head (2006-2016) of Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department, where he oversaw key transformations including streamlined ambulatory cataract surgery, tele-ophthalmology and primary eye care. The latter 2 were accorded TTSH Milestone Awards for being significant advances in clinical care. He also led the NHG Eye Institute as Medical Director (2011-2022), and was the Pro-Tem Chief of Woodlands Health Campus’ Ophthalmology Department (2018-2020). He has also served as a member of his hospital’s Medical Board (2008-2017).

A/Prof Wong obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and his Masters degree in Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 1999. He was awarded Singapore’s Ministry of Health Manpower Development Programme scholarship in 2002, and underwent his clinical fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UK, where his sub-specialty training focused on optic nerve head imaging in glaucoma. His research projects, covering topics such as glaucoma surgery, anterior segment imaging and therapeutics have been published in major peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences such as ARVO.

A/Prof Wong plays an active role in the training and education of junior ophthalmologists in Singapore, and his efforts were with multiple Best Teacher Awards. He has been mentor to four clinical fellows and a course instructor at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting, the World Glaucoma Congress and the European Glaucoma Society Congress.

His efforts in quality patient care have been recognized with Singapore’s Excellent Service Star Award in 2006. His appointments as Critical Incident Manager and Open Communication instructor reflect his keen interest in patient communication.

In 2013, A/Prof Wong received the Distinguished Service Award for Eye and Vision Health, and in 2014 he was the proud recipient of the National Healthcare Group Outstanding Citizenship Award. In 2019, as co-lead of the Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Programme, he was a recipient of the National Outstanding Clinical Excellence Team Award, and in 2025, he received the Public Sector Transformation Award in the Exemplary Leadership category.

A/Prof Wong is currently also serving as the volunteer Chairman of Guide Dogs Singapore, a social service agency which empowers people with visual impairment.
