Abstract

Humans have progressed significantly since the first industrial revolution in the 18th century – from steam power and mechanised factory systems, we are now in Industry 4.0 going on to Industry 5.0 where supercomputers, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and robotics gradually dominate most parts of our lives. Medicine has certainly benefitted from the advances in technology and Primary Care is no different. We will explore the use of digital health solutions that support virtual care. Video consultations can now be conducted seamlessly and effectively, contributed by the low barrier to entry. App interfaces can facilitate and even automate the interactions between the healthcare provider and the patient so that managing chronic diseases requires less effort and produces better results. We will also sight the disruption that can be caused by artificial intelligence, transforming traditional methods and usual care, while creating value in terms of streamlining workflows, and enabling new possibilities. By using technology, healthcare systems can operate with fewer resources, lower costs, and greater access – creating a model that is not only efficient, but also environmentally and socially sustainable.
